Khopra Danda Trek – Hidden Gem in the Annapurna Region

The Khopra Danda Trek offers a peaceful route as compared to the busier routes in the Annapurna region. The trek takes you through local villages, untouched forests and amazing landscapes covering the famous Annapurna peaks.

The trek is customizable, ranging between 7 to 9 days with optional hikes available along the way to Khopra Ridge.  A 7-day itinerary serves as a short yet fulfilling trip that would be perfect for travelers who have limited time on trek.  The 7-day trek to Khopra Ridge starts either from the scenic village of Ghandruk or Tadapani and gradually moves upward through oak and rhododendron forest till the top of Khopra Danda.

An optional day hike to Khayer Lake (at 4,600m), a remote alpine lake regarded as sacred by local Hindus, adds a spiritual touch to the trek.

Khopra Danda at 3,660 m has one of the best viewpoints in the Annapurna region, rivaled by more popular sites without the crowds. In clear weather, you will have an amazing panoramic view of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our team will warmly welcome you to Nepal and assist with your transfer to the hotel.

The trek starts from Pokhara.  There are various options to consider for the transfer from Kathmandu to Pokhara, depending on your choice of budget and available time on trek.

Option 1:

Starts in the early morning with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, following the picturesque Trishuli River. After approximately 6 hours, we will reach Pokhara, a vibrant city nestled beside beautiful lakes. Overnight stay in Pokhara.

Option 2:

Flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, followed by a drive to Ghandruk (1,940m; approximately 3-4 hours), then a short trek to Tadapani. Overnight in Tadapani (2,700m)

Based on Option 1 (refer to Day 02 options), after breakfast in Pokhara, we drive to Nayapul and then off-road to Ghandruk through Kimche. Ghandruk is well-known for its Buddhist monasteries. Drive time is approximately 3-4 hours.

You will then trek through rhododendron woods from Ghandruk to Tadapani. Trek time is approximately 4 hours. Overnight at Tadapani (2,700m)

Today, we will continue trekking into the countryside, passing by the local water buffalo fields. The trek goes upwards until we reach a small pass before the trail goes down through rhododendron trees from this pass to a village named Bayeli Kharka. Here, we can see Mt. Dhaulagiri – at 8,167 meters, Mt Dhaulagiri is the seventh-highest mountain in the world. Overnight at Bayeli Kharka.

We start off from Bayeli Kharka, trekking through the forests to get to the Chistibang meadows. From there, we trek upwards for approximately two hours to get to Khopra Danda. If you look into the horizon, you can see Dhaulagiri, Damphus Peak, Tukuche Peak, Nilgiri, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, and Sikha. From the Khopra Ridge, you can also see the Kaligandaki Valley, which is the deepest valley in the world. Overnight at Khopra Danda.

From Khopra Danda (hotel), we start our trek down to Swanta Village. Swanta Village is known by hikers for their cheese factory. Today, we have a relaxing day during which you can explore the village and have a taste of locally made cheese!

(Optional Hike)

An optional hike can be arranged in the morning from Khopra Danda to Khayar Lake (4,665 m). The trek is estimated to take 5 hours (to and fro). Khayar Lake is regarded by Hindus as a sacred lake and they believe that swimming in it will bring them to Nirvana. We return to Khopra Danda after visiting the lake, and continue the hike down to Swanta Village.

Overnight in Swanta Village.

We leave Swanta Village today and proceed on to Ghorepani. We start the day by trekking through the fields of the hamlet and crossing a small river via a suspension bridge. Here, we go back up to Chittre Village, where we join the iconic Annapurna Circuit trekking route. To reach Ghorepani, there will be an uphill climb.

Overnight in Ghorepani.

Final trekking day.

Early in the morning, we wake up before sunrise and climb to Poon Hill just in time to see the sun rise over the Annapurna horizon.  Poon Hill is renowned for its amazing views of the Himalayas.

After we have caught the sunrise, we return to Ghorepani to pick up our overnight bags before trekking down to Birethanti. From here, we take a bus back to Pokhara stopping in Nayapul on the way. Our trek concludes in Pokhara.

Overnight in Pokhara.

Bid farewell to Pokhara as we return to Kathmandu.
